Pohnpei – the Impressive Island of Micronesia

Pohnpei

Pohnpei is the largest island of the Federated States of Micronesia . It is also the tallest among the islands of the archipelago. It is known as a major tourist destination for the region as well as for its lush greenery and woodlands. The rain forests of the island are considered to be spectacular and are among the most photographed settings in the world.

Pohnpei features beguiling natural environment; rivers and lagoons, small or large waterfalls and large plains full of grass, trees and camping sites. Indeed, this island features the larger number of camping areas in the archipelago, as there are numerous tourists who travel there to unwind and relax in their tent listening to the soothing sounds of nature, or for the romantics who want to rest and admire the lovely tropical sky.

Pohnpei is also renowned as a place for the active and energetic ones; hiking, swimming, trekking and rappel are among the main activities promoted and encouraged in the island. It is also famous for the several dances and festivals. Locals make a very refreshing and relaxing drink named sakau; it is made from the pepper plant’s roots and tastes like a kava brew.

If you open a travel guide about Pohnpei you are most likely to find information about the several sea activities organised; fishing and diving are two of them. The coastline of the island is superb, to say the least, and is intersected by channels that connect with the rivers and lagoons. Coral reefs and sea plants and animals like anemones or even manta rays and sharks are to be expected when diving in to the sapphire waters of the archipelago. Small boats also take the travellers to the close by atolls, named And and Pakin. Visiting the atolls is an amazing experience you cannot miss.
