Canouan Island – The Small Heaven on Earth

Canouan

Canouan is one of the Grenadine islands lying in the Caribbean archipelago, almost 20 miles away from S. Vincent. It is a very small island, whose dimensions are 4 x 1,5 miles. It is known due to the natural habitat of exquisite beauty, as well as the barrier reef that crosses the one side of the island. This Reef is one of the most known and impressive in the Atlantic Ocean.

The Canouan Island is relatively flat, but features one small mountain, the Mount Royal. the most impressive part of the island, though, are the two bays that lie on the south part of the island. Their names are Glossy and Friendship.

The island was established almost 200 BC, as sea nomads arrived to this land. They were called Arawaks and they were the first that made peace with the other islanders of the Caribbean islands. However, the Caribs, a new tribe that arrived in 1,500 AD invaded the island, killed all men of the Arawak tribe and took the women. The history of the island doesn’t stop there though, as the Europeans came to the island and created a colony. The European settlements are still obvious, although the entire architecture of the island is colonial, full of European influences.

Today, the Canouan Island is a tourist destinations for Americans and Europeans who travel there due to the great facilities and services offered; the main attraction is nature. Turquoise waters, the coral reef, lush greenery and the calmness of the Caribbean Islands are advertised in every travel guide. Indeed, the island is a small paradise on earth. Small but impressive.
