The historical evidence from the area where present day Montreal is built shows that native people occupied the area for more than 2000 years before the Europeans arrived. Primarily the St. Lawrence Iroquoians lived in the area. The first European visitor to the area was Jacques Cartier, French explore. He claimed the area for France. Overt he next fifty years, the native population of the area had died out. This was most likely because of the influx of European diseases as well as infighting among tribes. Samuel de Champlain opens a fur trading post in the area of 161, establishing the first European city in the area. The outpost and the lands surrounding remained under French control until it was taken over by the British in the 1760’s.

The city of Montreal itself was established in 1882 and was the capital for Canada for several years until the parliament building was burnt by a mob. Today the city is the second largest city in all of Canada and is also the second largest French speaking city in the world, only Paris surpasses it.

Travel guides often refer to the city as the Cultural Capital of Canada and it is the center for French language programming throughout Canada. It has a rich history of Jazz music and is home to many festivals and other cultural events, especially during the summer. It is particularly well known for the Just for Laughs Comedy Festival. This is the largest comedy festival in the world.

Montreal is an interesting city to visit. Its long history and unique cultural position in Canada make for an interest tourist destination. Be prepared to speak French because it is the primary language of the city. This is one of Canada’s most beautiful and ethnically diverse cities and a pleasure to travel to.
